Who I Work With
I work with a small group of students each year. Three things matter for fit.

Academic Fit
For students studying the subjects I specialise in.
The Eigenstate Method's structured progression is built specifically for Maths and Economics, and works with students taking one subject or both.

Studying Maths, Economics, or both

At GCSE, A-Level, IB, or international equivalents

Emerging analytical or quantitative interest

Ambition
For students aiming at the most selective university pathways.
This work assumes a real destination — university admissions where the bar is high, and where consistency across years is what determines outcomes.

Targeting selective universities worldwide

Growth-oriented and intellectually curious

Motivated to perform at the highest academic level

Commitment
Designed for disciplined, long-arc learners.
The infrastructure that makes 1-1 academic support work only delivers when the student engages with it between sessions, not just inside the contact hour.

Consistent work ethic

Open to coaching and feedback

Willing to adopt structured systems

Why a small roster
Every engagement requires deep, sustained involvement — weekly 1-1 sessions, an Onboarding Diagnostic at the start, structured progression students work through between sessions, monthly progress reports for parents, university and pathway guidance, and the ongoing operator work that makes the system run. This level of detail isn't possible with a large roster.
Every enquiry is read personally before I respond. The book is currently full; availability opens up from autumn 2026 as students completing their final exams move on. Quality depends on constraint — keeping the book small protects the depth of engagement for every family already enrolled.
It is important to me that every student I work with reaches their full academic potential — and that requires buy-in to my methods both inside and outside our contact time. Most of what makes this work happens between sessions: the diagnostic, the Levels system in Maths, the model-essay progression in Economics, the monthly reports. The 1-1 time is the catalyst — working through blockers, building conceptual depth, stretching them beyond what the curriculum sets.
Please note that I don't select students based on current ability or recent test scores, but on their willingness and commitment to engage with the work outside the lesson. The initial conversation that follows your enquiry is where we explore that. Online delivery means UK and international families have equal access to the same standard.
The Eigenstate Method
Academic performance is not driven by any single thing. It emerges from the interaction of multiple variables — a student's psychological relationship with the subject, the depth and structure of their conceptual knowledge, the feedback loops that turn practice into improvement, and the compounding effect of small, well-designed behaviours sustained over time. This is the dynamical-systems framing that came out of my doctoral research and underpins the work.
The name Eigenstate isn't decorative: in dynamical systems, an eigenstate is the stable state a system settles into under the right conditions. The methodology aims to bring a student into a durable eigenstate of academic performance.

Meet Dave Bell
Dave Bell is a Cambridge-educated specialist in 1-1 academic support, working with students studying Maths or Economics (or both) across GCSE, A-Level, IB, and international equivalents. The approach is shaped by discipline, psychology-driven learning systems, and the long-arc framing developed across more than a decade of teaching and doctoral research into academic performance.

“Dave is an outstanding tutor.”
Dave is an outstanding tutor. My eldest son gained so much knowledge and confidence from his sessions with Dave. His grades improved quickly and his self belief followed. We were so impressed we hired Dave to tutor our second son, who again was finding aspects of Further Maths A Level tricky. He thrived too and exceeded expectations when he received his results this summer. Dave has excellent organisational skills, his knowledge is outstanding, his ability to communicate concepts is exceptional. I really cannot recommend him highly enough.

"From an E in mocks to an A in his A levels."
"Dave has been tutoring my son for A level Economics. He is a dedicated and excellent tutor. In a very short space of time my son has grown in confidence and his grades improved tremendously! He progressed from an E in his mock exams to an A in his A level exams. I can't thank Dave enough and would highly recommend him."
Maria, London
"Now predicted A* in both A level subjects — looking at universities he previously felt were out of reach."
"We cannot recommend Dave highly enough. He has increased our son's natural interest in Economics whilst the impact on his Maths has been incredible. His confidence has increased immeasurably based on now understanding the principles that sit behind the subject. As a result he is now predicted A* grades in both A level subjects and is looking at university options he previously felt were out of his reach."
Angela, Birmingham
"A difference in confidence and understanding within just a few lessons."
"Dave clearly explained the Maths concepts that our child was struggling with during the first year of A Levels. His engaging and encouraging style really worked and we could see the difference in confidence and understanding within just a few lessons. He quickly assessed the priority areas and provided targeted feedback. This was supported with additional work and self-study as well as reviews of mock and past papers, resulting in an A grade."
Rachna, Hampton Court
“his formulaic approach to 25 markers in particular has completely transformed my writing”
First and foremost Dave is a very knowledgeable Economist, who is able to explain economic methodology and theory in a detailed very understandable way. Especially with essay writing, his formulaic approach to 25 markers in particular has completely transformed my writing and I couldn’t recommend his service enough!
Oliver, Warwick
